With a new official message exalting its feline style, the new PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT heralds a new era and embodies the Brand’s vision for future electric vehicles. The vehicle features dozens of innovative technologies, including a 3D printed cockpit and revolutionary interior design featuring the use of innovative 3D printing on textile technology, in collaboration between Stratasys and Peugeot.

The first PEUGEOT Design Manifesto led by Matthias Hossann embodies the major change of the Brand. The name PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT (or “Inceptio” in Latin) means “the beginning”. It summarizes the ambition of this PEUGEOT manifesto to propel the driver into a new dimension, between dream and reality, promising intense emotions. Its ambition is to bring most of its innovations to production starting as early as 2025.

“PEUGEOT is changing, but the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT remains unmistakeably a PEUGEOT,” said Hossann, PEUGEOT Design Director. “It expresses the timeless feline attraction of the Brand and shows how optimistic we are about the future of the car and the emotions it provides. Bright and full of light, the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT reinvents the spatial experience of driving while illustrating some of our thinking behind reducing PEUGEOT’s carbon footprint by more than 50% by 2030. The transformation of the Brand concerns all aspects of the design, production and life of tomorrow’s PEUGEOT. Design is an integral part of this transformation.“

Velvet meets 3D printing

One of the key innovations for the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT’s interiors has been achieved via an innovative 3D printing and material approach. The seats and floor are covered with a very special velvet, made of 100% recycled polyester, with a very metallic sheen to play with the light diffused by the glass capsule.

To complement the new views offered by the postures of the seats and the clear view towards the road, this velvet is extended onto the floor. It is then printed with 3D patterns to act as a floor mat.  The continuity between the seats and the floor can be achieved with a single material. Developed as a collaboration between Stratasys and Peugeot, the 3D printing on this flexible textile is revolutionary and 100% recyclable.

The Stratasys 3DFashion technology used here allows direct-to-textile printing in full color and clear print enabling the creation of spectacular designs and fantastic optical illusionary effects on various types of textiles including garments, footwear and luxury accessories. 3DFashion technology enables optimization of the absorption rate mechanism allowing for perfect adhesion on a variety of fabric types.

A new generation of i-Cockpit

Besides obvious use in the prototype’s development, 3D printing is also used to increase comfort on final parts such as the Hypersquare control system. This all-new, more intuitive i-Cockpit lets the driver control all driving parameters, as steer-by-wire technology makes driving more instinctive and simpler, like a video game but in real life.

The ultimate ergonomics of the Hypersquare, which replaces the classic steering wheel, create a new, natural, simpler, and safer way of driving. The Hypersquare with digital electric controls consists of a screen with circular cells in each of its four corners which have several functions:

  • The completely natural and universal grip of the steering control
  • Fingertip driving comfort
  • Activation of the vehicle’s controls by pressing with the thumb
  • Similar movements to how we use our smartphones.
  • The intuitive aspect creates a high level of safety.

The center of the Hypersquare is a tablet-type screen dedicated to the distribution of control information. The pictograms for the different features (air conditioning, radio volume, ADAS, etc.) are displayed on the two side panels to facilitate access to the chosen control. The latter is located inside the circular recesses and can be accessed by moving the thumb only, without taking your hands off the steering control. For even more driving comfort, the rim of the Hypersquare is made from 3D printing, while in its center, the digital glass screen provides a high-tech appearance.

The next generation i-Cockpit includes the Stellantis STLA Smart Cockpit technology platform.

An optimistic future

The use of 3D printing for serial part production in the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT has not been addressed yet however some higher batch applications may eventually be considered if their value proposition fits the cost scheme. In general, the fact that the most advanced (and realistic) concept EV for the neat to medium term future consider some 3D printing applications indicates that most car manufacturers are aware that they need to keep an eye on this technology’s developments.

The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT expresses an overall optimistic vision with conviction, ready to meet the challenges of the future. With its new generation i-Cockpit and its Hypersquare control system, it revolutionizes driving enjoyment by offering a new, intuitive way of operating the car. Its innovative Skyspace panoramic glass concept provides new emotions and sensations. Its passenger compartment has a new interior space and the innovative architecture is complemented by materials that play with their colored reflections to shun black while redefining the idea of durability through new techniques.

The PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT opens up new perspectives with daring architecture, derived from the generation of “BEV-by-design” platforms, and comes in a generous size, further highlighting the excellence of its innovations. This manifesto will inspire the Brand’s future products, down to the most compact models of the range.

“PEUGEOT is committed to the electrification of its range,” said Linda Jackson, CEO of the PEUGEOT brand. “In 2023, 100% of the vehicles in the range will be electrified and in the next two years, five new 100% electric models will be launched. Our ambition is simple: to make PEUGEOT the leading electric brand in Europe by 2030. This objective and ambitious vision pave the way for a radical transformation for the Brand. It is embodied today in the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT which marks the beginning of a new era! PEUGEOT promises that the world is a better place with Allure, the PEUGEOT INCEPTION CONCEPT embodies the meaning of this promise from today onwards”.
