(Photo by EDUARDO MUNOZ \/ Microsoft Japan Co., Ltd. \/ Microsoft Japan)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"large-7 medium-7 columns single-content\">\n<p>Technology giant Microsoft set the stage earlier this month, quite literally, for a future in which long-distance coworkers can collaborate as though in the same room, using augmented reality glasses and cloud computing power.<\/p>\n<p>The US technology colossus launched the Microsoft Mesh platform at its annual Ignite developers conference, which was a streamed event this year due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the easiest ways to think about it is Microsoft Mesh connects the physical and digital worlds, allowing us to transcend the traditional boundaries of space and time,\u201d co-creator Simon Skaria said in a video presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman, whose team created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/hololens\">HoloLens augmented reality eyewear<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/techwireasia.com\/2020\/09\/are-we-any-closer-to-smart-glasses-in-business\/\">has caught on with businesses<\/a>, appeared as a hologram to unveil Mesh on a virtual stage.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mobile-advert-mpu\">\n<div class=\"ad\">\n<div id=\"tech_article_mpu\">  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mesh is powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/techhq.com\/2020\/10\/azure-space-why-microsoft-is-taking-its-cloud-into-orbit\/\">Azure cloud computing<\/a> systems that combine&nbsp;data&nbsp;center&nbsp;processing power with artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Holohedrons headgear with a US$3,500 price tag is used to overlay digital imagery on real world settings, but the Mesh platform has the potential to be synced to virtual reality gear such as Facebook-owned Oculus as well as smartphones, according to Kipman.<\/p>\n<h3>The future of reality is \u2018mixed\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Apple, Google, and&nbsp;Facebook&nbsp;are among the tech titans investing in mixed reality.<\/p>\n<p>Mesh is designed to let people collaborate and share holographic experiences in real time no matter how far apart they may be, presentations showed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can actually feel like you\u2019re in the same place with someone sharing content or you can teleport from different mixed reality devices and be present with people even when you\u2019re not physically together,\u201d Kipman said.<\/p>\n<p>People will initially be able to appear in Mesh experiences as avatars, but in the future will be able to project lifelike holograms of themselves, according to Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic caused a dramatic <a href=\"https:\/\/techhq.com\/2020\/06\/grammarly-business-helping-to-unify-the-business-voice-of-remote-workers\/\">shift to working<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/techhq.com\/2020\/06\/tackling-the-economic-problem-of-remote-learning-technology\/\">learning remotely<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/techhq.com\/2020\/04\/collaboration-cybersecurity-cloud-tools-remote-workings-winners\/\">reliance on cloud computing<\/a> instead of offices or classrooms expected to remain part of people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>The Redmond, Washington-based company expects outside developers and partners to build applications on Mesh, and is working to integrate it in products such as Teams virtual collaboration service.<\/p>\n<p>Niantic chief John Hanke took part in the Ignite presentation with a concept version of its popular Pok\u00e9mon Go mobile game running on HoloLens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis notion of bringing my virtual friends along with me as I go out and walk and explore the world \u2014 I just love that concept and I\u2019m really interested to see what we can do with that,\u201d Hanke said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">\u00a9 Agence France-Presse<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div class=\"social-bar\">\n<div class=\"social-buzz\">\n<span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\">\n<div class=\"mashsb-box\">\n<div class=\"mashsb-count mash-large\">\n<span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SOCIAL BUZZ<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<div class=\"single-byline full\">\n<div class=\"details\">\n<p class=\"show-for-medium\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techwireasia.com\/author\/joedevanesan\/\" title=\"Posts by Joe Devanesan\" rel=\"author\">Joe Devanesan<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n|  <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"twitter-icon.png social-icon-nav lazyload\" data- data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/NSCAYT.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thecrystalcrown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@thecrystalcrown<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joe&#8217;s interest in tech began when, as a child, he first saw footage of the Apollo space missions.
