It may not seem obvious, but change is coming. It always does.<\/p>\n<p>What change will look like for the computing world depends on how the strategies being put in place now by major cloud providers and an expanding ecosystem of technology firms become more widely adopted by enterprises at scale.<\/p>\n<p>Compute companies are thinking big in terms of expanding the capabilities of the cloud, but that will also mean putting more processing power into smaller devices, mass application of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and deploying workable, efficient solutions at the edge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Microsoft, we think of the cloud as the world\u2019s computer,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/markrussinovich\/\">Mark Russinovich<\/a>, chief technology officer at Microsoft Azure, said during an appearance this week as part of MIT Technology Review\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/event.technologyreview.com\/future-compute-2021\">\u201cFuture of Compute\u201d<\/a> virtual event. \u201cHow can we define a uniform computing environment? Ideally, developers should be writing code once and deploying it across the entire spectrum. This is one of the big challenges we\u2019re facing, there is still a ton of work and innovation left to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Rise of exascale computing<\/h3>\n<p>If the cloud is indeed going to be the world\u2019s computer, then compute itself must become bigger, better and faster. Uncontrolled data growth combined with the growing need for AI, simulations and modeling workloads have created the ultimate mission-critical workflow.<\/p>\n<p>That will require exascale or high-performance computing through technologies introduced by enterprise vendors such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpe.com\/us\/en\/what-is\/exascale.html\">combined resources<\/a> of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and Cray Inc. Exascale, <a href=\"https:\/\/diginomica.com\/how-supercomputers-found-their-industry-mojo-evolution-high-performance-computing\">defined<\/a> as the ability to produce more than a quintillion double-precision floating point calculations per second, has expanded to the reality where there is now a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top500.org\/lists\/top500\/2020\/11\/\">\u201cTOP500 list\u201d<\/a> of the fastest supercomputers in the world.<\/p>\n<p>A key development in the exascale computing scene will be the ability to leverage compute power to move large amounts of data and applications on and off machines. An example of this can be found in HPE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpe.com\/us\/en\/pdfViewer.html?docId=a50002368&amp;parentPage=\/us\/en\/products\/compute\/hpc\/slingshot-interconnect&amp;resourceTitle=HPE+Slingshot%3A+The+Interconnect+for+the+Exascale+Era+technical+white+paper\">Slingshot interconnect<\/a> which can manage data-intensive workflows through communication via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextplatform.com\/2020\/05\/05\/hpes-ungaro-on-delivering-exascale-for-the-masses\/\">Ethernet running in data centers<\/a> around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re building these systems to perform like a supercomputer, but run like the cloud,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpe.com\/us\/en\/leadership-bios\/pete-ungaro.html\">Peter Ungaro<\/a>, general manager of high-performance computing and mission critical solutions at HPE, said during a presentation at the MIT event. \u201cIt\u2019s a really fundamental new generation of technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Building the internet computer<\/h3>\n<p>While high-performance computing represents a major trend in expanding compute power, there\u2019s also an effort gathering steam to transform who controls the servers themselves. <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconangle.com\/2018\/08\/29\/andreessen-horowitz-co-leads-102m-round-blockchain-startup-dfinity\/\">Funded<\/a> by crypto token sales and investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, the <a href=\"https:\/\/dfinity.org\/foundation\/\">Dfinity Foundation<\/a> is seeking to create one of the biggest transformations in tech: making the internet itself the world\u2019s largest computer.<\/p>\n<p>Dfinity\u2019s concept of an internet computer is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2020\/07\/01\/1004725\/redesign-internet-apps-no-one-controls-data-privacy-innovation-cloud\/\">built on decentralized technology<\/a> fueled by independent data centers where software runs anywhere on the internet rather than on servers controlled by major cloud providers such as Microsoft Corp. or Amazon Web Services Inc.<\/p>\n<p>By wresting control of compute networks away from advertising or fee-dependent providers, Dfinity envisions a return of the internet to its roots as a free market where innovation can thrive. Dfinity <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/06\/30\/dfinity-demos-its-tiktok-clone-opens-up-its-internet-computer-to-outside-developers\/\">opened to developers<\/a> last year and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/09\/30\/dfinitys-valuation-soars-to-9-5bn-after-revealing-its-governance-system-and-token-economics\/\">unveiled<\/a> its governance system and token economics in September. In December, it <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/dfinity-quietly-launched-the-internet-computer-mainnet-last-month\">launched the mainnet<\/a> of its internet computer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe internet computer is an extension of the internet that takes it from being an open permissionless network to also being an open permissionless compute platform,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/thedwilliams\/\">Dominic Williams<\/a>, president and chief scientist at Dfinity. \u201cIt will not only change the way we work, but enable us to innovate in completely new ways. Ten years from now, it will be absolutely clear that the internet computer is going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Williams\u2019 vision indeed becomes reality, it could have a major impact on companies which have made big bets on the marriage of proprietary cloud and on-premises data center architectures. IBM Corp. is one firm that falls squarely in this <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconangle.com\/2020\/05\/05\/ibm-antes-up-in-new-era-of-hybrid-cloud-and-edge-computing-think2020\/\">hybrid model<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_538798\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/UepNrd.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-538798 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/UepNrd.jpg?resize=300%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"169\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/UepNrd.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d15shllkswkct0.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2021\/02\/Krishna-Future-Compute-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d15shllkswkct0.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2021\/02\/Krishna-Future-Compute-800x451.jpg 800w, https:\/\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/UepNrd.jpg 806w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/169;\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">IBM CEO Arvind Krishna (Photo: MIT Future Compute livestream)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company has moved aggressively to capture the hybrid cloud market through its <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ibm.com\/2018-10-28-IBM-To-Acquire-Red-Hat-Completely-Changing-The-Cloud-Landscape-And-Becoming-Worlds-1-Hybrid-Cloud-Provider\">acquisition of Red Hat Inc.<\/a> and its OpenShift platform for $34 billion in 2018. In an appearance during the MIT event this week, IBM\u2019s chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ibm.com\/Arvind-Krishna\">Arvind Krishna<\/a>&nbsp;made it clear that his company has no intention of departing from that strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHybrid is where the money is, it\u2019s where the next generation architecture is going,\u201d Krishna said. \u201cWith only 20% of workload in public, it should have moved a lot faster and the fact that it has not tells you there is a lot of demand for both public and private infrastructures. Is it a phase or is it a destination? History will show who is right.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Moving deep learning to devices<\/h3>\n<p>However, the future of compute is not all about massive amounts of computational power or global distributed systems. There is an effort underway to take deep learning away from large systems where it has been traditionally processed and miniaturize it directly at the device level.<\/p>\n<p>MIT researchers have developed a system called <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2020\/iot-deep-learning-1113\">MCUNet<\/a>&nbsp;that designs compact neural networks for deep learning on \u201cinternet of things\u201d devices. In a presentation from <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=dVtzVVAAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Ji Lin<\/a>, a Google Scholar and Ph.D. student working under the auspices of AI pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/innovator\/song-han\/\">Song Han<\/a>, evidence was offered which showed how deep learning could be performed using microcontrollers.<\/p>\n<p>Using what Lin described as \u201ctiny NAS\u201d or neural architecture search and \u201ctiny engine\u201d to generate the code needed to run the NAS, researchers were able to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2020\/iot-deep-learning-1113\">classify<\/a>&nbsp;more than 70% of novel images from the ImageNet database on a microcontroller.<\/p>\n<p>Advances such as those will have implications for both the impact of AI and machine learning in enterprise computing and deployment of smart technologies to the edge.<\/p>\n<p>One area where acceleration of machine learning could have a significant influence is in industrial robotics. Amazon.com Inc. has developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/blogs\/machine-learning\/performing-simulations-at-scale-with-amazon-sagemaker-processing-and-r-on-rstudio\/\">number of offerings<\/a> to support this space and the retail giant points to its own massive network of automated fulfillment centers as a prime example of how the use of simulation can make a major difference in training data for robotics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is 20 minutes from the time you order something to when it gets placed on a truck and on its way to you,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/billvass\/\">Bill Vass<\/a>, vice president of engineering at AWS. \u201cThose fulfillment centers were designed based on simulation. The robotics manufacturers need to embrace simulation and machine learning. They have been slow to do that up to now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One company that\u2019s all-in when it comes to the use of AI and machine learning is the cloud-based platform-as-a-service provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicenow.com\/\">ServiceNow Inc.<\/a> The company made <a href=\"https:\/\/diginomica.com\/servicenows-ai-chief-solving-last-mile-problem-enterprise-ai\">four analytics-related acquisitions<\/a> over the past year, the most recent being the purchase of Element AI in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen widespread adoption of machine learning across our enterprise,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/cbedi\/\">Chris Bedi<\/a>, chief information officer at ServiceNow. \u201cWe really have an opportunity as technologists to bring machine learning into everything we do. I firmly believe it will deliver the next exponential jump in productivity for every company that uses it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A common theme running throughout the discussion around the future of compute was general acceptance that much of the enterprise action was moving to the edge. Yet to be determined are the technologies which will give major players a competitive advantage in that space.<\/p>\n<p>One of the trends on the radar is the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3243111\/what-is-fog-computing-connecting-the-cloud-to-things.html\">fog computing<\/a>, a decentralized computing environment positioned between cloud and edge where data and applications can be manipulated without device limitations or the expense of big server infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Cisco Systems Inc. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/solutions\/computing\/what-is-edge-computing.html#~revenue-opportunities\">claimed credit<\/a> for coining the term in 2014 and has been active in building solutions around it. There are a number of tech companies considered to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wicz.com\/story\/43185926\/global-fog-computing-market-size-2021-details-such-as-revenues-market-share-strategies-growth-rate-product-amp-their-pricing-by-regioncountry-for-all\">major players<\/a> in this segment, including Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>However, in his discussion during the MIT event, Microsoft\u2019s CTO sounded a note of skepticism about the future of fog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m skeptical that fog will become the general architecture for edge computing,\u201d Russinovich said. \u201cWe\u2019re still figuring out what these edge topologies will look like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how edge technologies get sorted out, there can be little doubt that the coming of a new 5G wireless standard will shape much of computing\u2019s future for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c5G is going to drive more edge compute than we\u2019re used to,\u201d said IBM\u2019s Krishna. \u201cIt will take the next two to four years to play out. To paraphrase Arthur C.
