Now they come in phones costing almost 99% less. Another got hired by Tesla with a commission to 3D scan all the new Tesla cars. <\/p>\n<p>And just one month after the launch of the iPhone 12 Pro, Apple\u2019s latest iPhone already was accounting for 5% of the daily uploads to the platform all by itself. Which means, according to Denoyal, that iPhone is unlocking 3D content creation for the mainstream. Photogrammetry, on the other hand, works by taking hundreds or thousands of pictures and then combining them via post-processing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically scanning a room, like I scanned the office, it took three minutes to go around the room with my iPhone and 60 seconds to process \u2014 like 4 minutes total,\u201d says Denoyal. \u201cIf I had done this with photogrammetry, it would have been at least 500 pictures. So maybe like 10 minutes to take the pictures and then several hours of processing &#8230; so, more than 100X [faster].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlocking user-generated 3D content is huge for a number of emerging and established industries.<\/p>\n<p>Game publishers use 3D scanned objects in their games. Movie makers do the same. Augmented reality systems get smarter. Image recognition systems are able to train on known data, which impacts everything from self-driving cars to autonomous drones. But the biggest use cases right now are movies and games, both of which are increasingly using digital objects. Games are essentially 3D worlds and therefore need 3D assets to populate them and improve verisimilitude. Movies, on the other hand, can save money by substituting digital objects for real ones. <\/p>\n<p>With lidar on the iPhone 12 Pro, more people can create for these digital object markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis essentially moves our potential user base from maybe 50 million 3D professionals to \u2026 two billion people with smartphones,\u201d Denoyal says. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty major.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But mainstreaming 3D content creation isn\u2019t just about becoming a digital supply chain for movies, videos, and AI algorithms. It\u2019s also about personal memories, just like photos. Or even better, because they\u2019re full three dimensional scans. <\/p>\n<p>One example: Denoyal has a 3D scan of his late grandmother, a digital portrait of her in a form and shape that is much closer to what she was in real life. Which means, in some ways similar to the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uJE8pfPfVRo\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uJE8pfPfVRo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uJE8pfPfVRo\" aria-label=\"Tupac Shakur hologram performance\">Tupac Shakur hologram performance<\/a>, he can re-visit his grandmother in a more visceral sense than viewing a picture or watching a movie.<\/p>\n<p>The technology is not the same and doesn\u2019t always work as well as traditional photogrammetry, however. Room-scale and larger is great with lidar; smaller objects tend to lose detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically, if you try to scan a shoe, it\u2019s going to struggle,\u201d Denoyal says. \u201cI think it\u2019s a matter of the apps improving, sensor improving, and also Apple exposing more raw data from what it captures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Especially for smaller objects, photogrammetry works well. The more pictures and the higher resolution, the more detailed your 3D object can be. Lidar will continue to improve, although visuals will likely always be needed.
