{"id":4179,"date":"2020-12-12T02:59:46","date_gmt":"2020-12-12T02:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/techclot.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/12\/us-special-operations-command-employs-ai-and-machine-learning-to-improve-operations\/"},"modified":"2020-12-12T02:59:46","modified_gmt":"2020-12-12T02:59:46","slug":"us-special-operations-command-employs-ai-and-machine-learning-to-improve-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/techclot.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/12\/us-special-operations-command-employs-ai-and-machine-learning-to-improve-operations\/","title":{"rendered":"US Special Operations Command Employs AI and Machine Learning to Improve Operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?rct=j&#038;sa=t&#038;url=http:\/\/broadbandbreakfast.com\/2020\/12\/u-s-special-operations-command-employs-ai-and-machine-learning-to-improve-operations\/&#038;ct=ga&#038;cd=CAIyHDkyYmU1MGQ5NjY1NjYxZTA6Y28udWs6ZW46R0I&#038;usg=AFQjCNHY9H0mQhIn6GcVJWuUgmqVdLFM3g\">US Special Operations Command Employs AI and Machine Learning to Improve Operations<\/a><\/p>\n<p><p>December 11, 2020 \u2014 In today\u2019s digital environment, winning wars requires more than \u201cboots on the ground.\u201d It also requires computer algorithms and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>The United States\u2019 Special Operations Command is currently playing a critical role advancing the employment of AI and machine learning in the fight against the country\u2019s current and future advisories, through Project Maven.<\/p>\n<p>To discuss the initiatives taking place as part of the project, General <strong>Richard Clarke, <\/strong>who currently serves as the Commander of USSOCOM, and <strong>Richard Shultz,<\/strong> who has served as a security consultant to various U.S. government agencies since the mid-1980s, joined the Hudson Institute for a virtual discussion on Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adtran.com\/index.php\/rdof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/EcPHPP.png?resize=300%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"250\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/250;\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among other objectives, Project Maven aims to develop and integrate computer-vision algorithms needed to help military and civilian analysts encumbered by the sheer volume of full-motion video data that the Department of Defense collects every day in support of counterinsurgency and counter terrorism operation, according to Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>When troops carry out militarized site exploration, or military raids, they bring back copious amounts of computers, papers, and hard drives, filled with potential evidence. In order to manage enormous quantities of information in real time to achieve strategic objectives, the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Function task force, launched in April 2017, began utilizing AI to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had to find a way to put all of this data into a common database,\u201d said Clarke. \u201cOver the last few years, humans were tasked with sorting through this content \u2014 watching every video, and reading every detainee report. A human cannot sort and shift through this data quickly and deeply enough,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-4\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/commlawgroup.com\/2020\/commlaw-group-now-offers-flat-fee-privacy-awareness-training-programs-tailored-to-your-telecom-cloud-communications-company-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/4fQ5C0.png?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/300;\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>AI and machine learning have demonstrated that algorithmic warfare can aid military operations.<\/p>\n<p>Project Maven initiatives helped \u201cincrease the frequency of raid operations from 20 raids a month to 300 raids a month,\u201d said Schultz. \u201cAI technology increases both the number of decisions that can be made, and the scale. Faster more effective decisions on your part, are going to give enemies more issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Project Maven initiatives have increased the accuracy of bomb targeting. \u201cInstead of hundreds of people working on these initiatives, today it is tens of people,\u201d said Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>AI has also been used to rival adversary propaganda. \u201cI now spend over 70 percent of my time in the information environment. If we don\u2019t influence a population first, ISIS will get information out more quickly,\u201d said Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>AI and machine learning tools, enable USSOCOM to understand \u201cwhat an enemy is sending and receiving, what are false narratives, what are bots, and more,\u201d the detection of which allows decision makers to make faster, and more accurate, calls.<\/p>\n<p>Military use of machine learning for precision raids and bomb strikes naturally raises concerns. In 2018, more than 3,000 Google employees signed a petition in protest against the company\u2019s involvement with Project Maven.<\/p>\n<p>In an open letter addressed to CEO <strong>Sundar Pichai<\/strong>, Google employees expressed concern that the U.S. military could weaponize AI and apply the technology towards refining drone strikes and other kinds of lethal attacks. \u201cWe believe that Google should not be in the business of war,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/4125382\/google-pentagon-ai-project-maven\/\">the letter read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-9\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adtran.com\/index.php\/rdof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/techclot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/avy6l9.jpg?resize=640%2C105&#038;ssl=1\" alt width=\"640\" height=\"105\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; notes to improve the health system&#8217;s care quality and outcomes in diagnostic imaging.<\/li>\n<li>Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/osf-healthcare-using-ai-virtual-assistant-to-improve-covid-19-screenings-care-navigation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">began using<\/a> patient engagement software startup Gyant&#8217;s AI-powered virtual clinical assistant to aid healthcare providers as they offer patients COVID-19 screening for and education about the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.<\/li>\n<li>Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/mayo-clinic-uses-ai-to-map-covid-19-hot-zones.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teamed up<\/a> with the state&#8217;s health department to create an AI-powered tool that can identify zones of greater COVID-19 transmission in southern Minnesota.<\/li>\n<li>Mayo Clinic also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/mayo-clinic-tests-ai-to-map-how-coronavirus-affects-heart-health.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">began using AI software<\/a> from U.K. health tech company Ultromics to analyze echocardiograms of COVID-19 patients to identify how the virus affects the cardiovascular system. <\/li>\n<li>Mayo Clinic also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/mayo-clinic-to-implement-ai-powered-predictive-patient-triage-platform.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entered a collaboration<\/a> with Diagnostic Robotics to implement its AI platform that predicts patients&#8217; hospitalization risk and triages them to appropriate care. <\/li>\n<li>UC San Diego Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/uc-san-diego-uses-ai-to-help-detect-pneumonia-covid-19-from-lung-x-rays.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">developed and applied<\/a> an AI algorithm to more than 2,000 lung X-ray images, helping radiologists more quickly identify signs of early pneumonia in COVID-19 patients.<\/li>\n<li>Mount Sinai Health System in New York City <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/mount-sinai-pioneers-ai-tech-for-rapid-covid-19-diagnosis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">began using an AI algorithm<\/a> that can quickly detect COVID-19 based on how lungs appear in CT scans along with patient data such as age, sex, symptoms, bloodwork and potential contact with the virus. <\/li>\n<li>Mount Sinai Health System researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/mount-sinai-builds-machine-learning-models-to-predict-covid-19-mortality.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also deployed machine learning-powered models<\/a> that identify high risk and likelihood of mortality in COVID-19 patients.<\/li>\n<li>La Crosse, Wis.-based Gundersen Health System <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/gundersen-implements-ai-tech-amid-pandemic-expects-10m-return.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invested in AI technology<\/a> that would help collect insurer payments and lower administrative errors as well as speed up the time it takes to receive outstanding payments.<\/li>\n<li>University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/artificial-intelligence\/ge-university-hospitals-cleveland-partner-on-ai-lung-imaging-tech.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">began using<\/a> GE Healthcare&#8217;s AI-powered imaging technology daily to identify patients&#8217;
