Artificial intelligence and humankind<\/a><\/p>\n

A chara, \u2013 Paul Connolly is correct to challenge the assumption that if something produces better outcomes then it does not matter whether it\u2019s human or machine (Letters, November 5th<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The current lack of significant ethical frameworks, underpinned by law, around the competing usages of artificial intelligence (AI) by so many global commercial firms has been noted in several reports. <\/p>\n

Machine intelligence is certainly assisting us to accelerate our learning in ways that we have never experienced before. However, this is surely our greatest challenge, to assimilate our new learning despite our significant biological limitations. After all, we don\u2019t have a great track record in these areas, particularly when you examine the misuse of science and its impact on the ecology of our planet. Increasingly the convergence of quantum science with machine learning will produce AI technology certainly beyond our understanding and possibly beyond our control. <\/p>\n

Thousands of well-funded commercial and government agencies are already furiously in competition to make this happen. <\/p>\n

After all, this is how we humans have \u201cprogressed\u201d for centuries; we experiment to find how things work and we then apply the new science into our lives, even before we fully understand the consequences of our discoveries. <\/p>\n

But if our leaders and politicians are not familiar with the language or alert to the ethical challenges and dangers arising from the application of artificial intelligence and its technologies, then surely we are heading for a potential disaster? \u2013 Is mise, <\/p>\n

The year is coming to a close and it\u2019s safe to say Elon Musk\u2019s prediction<\/a> that his company would field one million \u201crobotaxis\u201d by the end of 2020 isn\u2019t going to come true. In fact, so far, Tesla\u2019s managed to produce exactly zero self-driving vehicles. And we can probably call off the singularity too. GPT-3 has been impressive, but the closer machines get to aping human language the easier it is to see just how far away from us they really are<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So where does that leave us, ultimately, when it comes to the future of AI? That depends on your outlook. Media hype and big tech\u2019s advertising machine has set us up for heartbreak when we compare the reality in 2020 to our 2016-era dreams of fully autonomous flying cars<\/a> and hyper-personalized digital assistants capable of managing the workload of our lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But, if you\u2019re gauging the future of AI from a strictly financial, marketplace point of view, there\u2019s an entirely different outlook to consider. American rock band Timbuk 3 put it best when they sang \u201cthe future\u2019s so bright, I gotta wear shades.\u201d<\/p>\n
