Source: Shutterstock<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"large-7 medium-7 columns single-content\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ByteDance is taking a hit overseas with doubts over the future of TikTok<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The firm is hedging its bets on the growth of the online education market<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Chinese technology giant ByteDance was soaring high a few mere months ago. Its video-sharing app TikTok surged past 2 billion downloads, and hit a US$100 billion value amid a pandemic-fuelled spike in social media usage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But within the last month, things have begun to look a bit gloomier for the world\u2019s high-value startup. The firm\u2019s prize app \u2013 a key earner of advertising dollars from overseas \u2013 now faces a ban in the US over inflated security concerns, or a forced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techwireasia.com\/2020\/08\/microsoft-buying-tiktok-could-it-resolve-australias-security-concerns\/\"><span>sale to a potential Microsoft<\/span><\/a><span>, and things don\u2019t look as good as they had done.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As US-China disagreements continue to spill over into the tech industry, China\u2019s tech leaders are seeing expansion opportunities taper, and must instead focus efforts and investments on securing their patch at home. Fortunately, Douyin \u2013 the company\u2019s Chinese version of TikTok \u2013 along with news aggregator Toutiao, is generating the bulk of revenue.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nonetheless, the uncertainty is cause for diversity, and recent movements have suggested Bytedance is ready to commit wholesale to a current, emerging market that it\u2019s betting holds a longer-term promise: online education.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mobile-advert-mpu\">\n<div class=\"ad\">\n<div id=\"tech_article_mpu\">  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The Chinese tech firm has recently launched two apps. The first is GuaGuaLong English, which aims to teach two-to-eight-year-olds in China English, and GuaGuaLong Mind, which aims to teach children of kindergarten age mathematics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>GuaGuaLong refers to the apps\u2019 AI-driven tutor, a character which takes the form of a dragon and provides prompts and feedback to the user\u2019s interactions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Byedance\u2019s confidence in online education is evident in its registering of more than 200 GuaGuaLong trademarks over the course of the last two years, including those suggesting an expansion to coding and calligraphy, <\/span><span>an important channel for the appreciation of traditional culture and for arts education in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>ByteDance reaffirmed its interest in the education market in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ww01.net\/en\/archives\/51037\"><span>open letter<\/span><\/a><span> from founder Zhang Yiming, marking its eighth anniversary in March.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe online tutoring market is very hot recently, and many people ask about my company\u2019s business progress [\u2026] the education business must have more fundamental innovations,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even before the pandemic, Research and Markets <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchandmarkets.com\/reports\/4876815\/online-education-market-and-global-forecast-by?utm_source=dynamic&amp;utm_medium=BW&amp;utm_code=nvzl68&amp;utm_campaign=1334853+-+$350+Billion+Online+Education+Market:+Global+Forecast+to+2025+by+End+User,+Learning+Mode+(Self-Paced,+Instructor+Led),+Technology,+Country,+Company&amp;utm_exec=chdo54bwd\"><span>forecast<\/span><\/a><span> the online education market as $350 Billion by 2025, but that projection is likely much larger now due to a digital learning migration.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Flexibility, convenience, cost, and the elimination of a commute, are big draws for users of online education programs. But there is also the huge added value of online learning tech companies using AI to turn vast amounts of user data into personalized courses and training for individuals.
