Lockport Approves Lease For Hydroponic Growing Operation<\/a><\/p>\n

LOCKPORT, IL \u2014 Lockport residents may soon see some vegetables, herbs and microgreens growing in town after the city approved an agreement with Second City Greens for a hydroponic growing operation.<\/p>\n

At its Aug. 5 meeting, the city council approved a lease agreement with Second City Greens to set up their urban agriculture operation on a vacant foundation pad at 201 W. Sixth St. According to council documents, the foundation pad was the site of the Sloyan building.<\/p>\n

The lease will last three years, and a year-t0-year lease renewal will begin after that. According to council documents, the rent is for a nominal amount of $1 per year, but Second City Greens is responsible for operational costs, insurance and real estate tax implications.<\/p>\n

Second City Greens will set up vegetables and lettuce to grow in cargo container spaces. According to the business’ website, it engages in the communities it serves<\/a> and also provides a platform for education and training on the benefits or urban agriculture.<\/p>\n

In order for the cargo containers to use the pad, it must be stabilized and also would require ADA accessible pedestrian access, council documents state. In June, the council approved $225,000 to stabilize the pad, and its Aug. 5 meeting, the council approved an additional $135,000 to remove most of the existing foundation.<\/p>\n

The removal of the foundation would allow for more flexibility in the future, including more parking, council documents state.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
